Chapter 14: The Dying Merchant's Gift

~1.9k words · 2026-09-08

The scene that greeted Kai Lin was one of brutal, recent violence. A covered wagon, its canvas ripped to shreds, lay on its side like a wounded beast. The two draft horses were down, their throats slit, their massive bodies already beginning to bloat in the humid air. The acrid smell he'd detected was a mix of blood, voided bowels, and the sharp tang of burnt Qi.

But it was the man pinned beneath the wagon's shattered axle that drew Kai's attention. He was middle-aged, with the weathered hands of a tradesman and fine, merchant-grade robes now soaked crimson. A jagged piece of wood protruded from his side, and his breathing was a shallow, gurgling rattle. He was the one still alive. Barely.

*The merchant,* the Void Sovereign's voice was low, thoughtful. *Or one of his guards. The timing is... unfortunate.*

Kai ignored the voice. He moved into the clearing, his bare feet silent on the soaked earth. The man's eyes fluttered open as Kai approached, wide with a mixture of terror and desperate hope. He tried to speak, but only a wet cough escaped his lips, spraying fine droplets of blood.

"Easy," Kai said, his voice low. He crouched beside the man, his eyes scanning the clearing for any sign of the attackers. There were no other bodies. A one-sided fight, then. The man had been left to die.

The merchant's hand twitched, reaching for a leather satchel that lay a few feet away, its strap severed. *"The... the list..."* he wheezed, his eyes fixed on Kai with an intensity that burned through the pain. *"He wants... the list... Must not... let him..."*

Kai's gaze flicked to the satchel. He could feel it now, a faint hum of Qi emanating from within. It was a storage artifact, common enough for traveling merchants, but this one felt… different. Warmer, more refined.

*The assassin is still hunting,* the Void Sovereign warned. *The blood is fresh. An hour, perhaps two. He will return to check for survivors. Take the satchel and leave. The man is beyond saving.*

Kai's jaw tightened. The voice was right. The merchant was dying; his Qi was already dissipating into the air like mist. But Kai couldn't just leave him. Not like this. He'd been left to die in a ditch. He knew the feeling intimately.

"I'll get you out," Kai said, his hands moving to the axle. He grunted, pushing with all his mortal strength. The wood was thick, heavy, and slick with rain. It didn't budge.

The merchant's hand shot out, surprisingly strong, grabbing Kai's wrist. His grip was like a manacle. *"No... time."* His eyes were glassy, but lucid. *"You... you're the boy. The one the mountain is looking for."*

Kai froze. *How does he know?* The hunt for him couldn't have spread this fast. Wei had only just discovered his new power hours ago.

A faint smile touched the merchant's lips, a grim rictus of pain. *"Word travels faster than a man can run on the winds of a storm. A Seeker of the Heavens was asking questions in Greenstone Ford."* He coughed, a violent, wracking sound that shook his frail frame. *"I traded for supplies there an hour before they came for me. I heard... I heard them describe you."*

A cold dread slithered down Kai's spine. Seekers. Here. Already. He'd assumed he had weeks, maybe months, before they found his trail. But the Void Sovereign's remnant had a distinct signature, and the Heavens had long, sharp ears.

*He's telling the truth,* the Void Sovereign murmured. *I can sense the residual flair of their Qi in his wounds. It has that sterile, righteous burn to it. They did this. They found this man, and they destroyed him looking for information. Looking for you.*

The merchant's grip tightened, his nails digging into Kai's skin. *"They wanted to know where the 'Void-touched boy' was heading. I told them... I told them I didn't know."* A bloody tear traced a path down his grime-streaked cheek. *"They didn't believe me. They burned my ledger, my contracts... but they didn't find the real list."* His gaze shifted to the satchel. *"My last shipment. A cargo of spirit herbs... for the apothecary in Cinder Falls. The Seekers want it. They want the documentation of where it comes from. It's for the rebel sects."*

Kai's mind raced. The Seekers of the Heavens were the enforcers of a celestial mandate that demanded the subjugation of all cultivation sects that defied the Heavenly Court's rule. They were ruthless, absolute, and they considered Kai's very existence an aberration to be purged. That they were hunting a common merchant for smuggling herbs for "rebel sects" was not a surprise. That their path had crossed his so soon was a disaster.

*"Take it,"* the merchant rasped, his voice fading. *"They think it's lost. You take it... you get it to... to Old Man Feng... in Cinder Falls. He's expecting it. He'll pay you. He'll hide you."* His eyes were starting to glaze over. This was his last act, his final defiance against the power that had crushed him. *"Swear it... boy. Swear you'll see it done."*

Kai looked at the satchel, then back at the dying man. This was a burden. A dangerous, conspicuous burden. He had his own mission, his own survival to think about. Getting entangled in a Seeker investigation was the last thing he needed. But as he looked into the merchant's desperate eyes, he saw something else. A man refusing to be erased. A man who chose to fight back with his last breath, even if it was through a rootless boy he'd never met.

*I'm a fugitive,* Kai thought. *Hiding from the most powerful cultivators in the world. And this man wants me to run his errand for him.*

*The enemy of my enemy,* the Void Sovereign said, a hint of dark amusement coating his strained voice. *This errand takes you to Cinder Falls. It puts you under the protection of a man who defies the Seekers, who has resources and knowledge. It gives you a purpose, a reason to be there other than simply fleeing. And it spits in the eye of the very people who hunt you. The choice is yours, boy. But the Heavens have already condemned you. You might as well take allies where you can find them.*

Kai stared at the satchel. It was a chain, a leash leading into an unknown den of potential danger. But it was also a key. A key to a door that might lead to a place where he could grow in safety. He thought of Wei, of the cold calculation in his brother's eyes. He thought of the Seekers, who were already on his trail. He was just one boy with a forbidden power he could barely control.

He needed a chance. This was it.

"I swear it," Kai said, his voice hard as stone. "I will get this to Cinder Falls. To Old Man Feng."

The merchant's body sagged, a final, shuddering breath escaping his lips. The light in his eyes faded, but the faint smile remained. He had passed his burden on. He was free.

Kai gently closed the man's eyes with his fingers, a small gesture of respect. Then, with a surge of effort, he grabbed the satchel's strap and pulled it free. He didn't dare open it here, not with the scent of Seeker Qi still burning in the air. He simply tied the strap around his waist, feeling the weight of the artifact settle against his hip.

*He was a brave man,* the Void Sovereign said, his tone uncharacteristically somber. *He used his final moments to defy his killers. Remember him. Remember that defiance can be the most powerful weapon of all.*

Kai nodded, his throat tight. He stood, taking one last look at the clearing. The rain was almost a drizzle now, the storm finally breaking. The air was still thick with the smell of death. The Seekers would be back soon. He had to move.

He turned, heading towards the eastern edge of the grove, when a voice, cold and smooth as polished ice, cut through the silence from behind him.

"Leaving so soon, Void-touched?"

Kai spun, his heart slamming against his ribs. A figure stood at the edge of the clearing, where the path continued east. It was a man, tall and lean, clad in pristine white and silver robes that seemed to repel the lingering dampness. His face was obscured by a wide-brimmed hat, but his eyes, visible in the shadow, were the color of a winter sky. In his hand, he held a simple, unadorned sword. It was the stillest thing Kai had ever seen, a rod of perfect silver death.

Kai hadn't heard him approach. He hadn't sensed him at all. The man was a ghost.

*Seeker,* the Void Sovereign hissed, his voice a bolt of pure alarm. *A Core Formation operative. Run. NOW!*

But Kai's feet wouldn't move. He was pinned by the man's gaze, a pressure so immense it felt like the entire sky was resting on his shoulders. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't think. This was the power of a true cultivator, a man who had condensed his Qi into a solid core of pure energy. Compared to the golden flicker in Kai's dantian, this man was a blazing sun.

The Seeker tilted his head, a predatory curiosity in his posture. "Interesting. The reports said your root was broken. A cripple. Yet I can feel a resonance in you. A filthy, discordant note against the Harmony of Heaven." He took a single step forward, and the ground beneath his foot seemed to recoil. "My brothers were sent to the mountain to find a frightened boy. But I am a man who prefers to hunt in the shadows, to find the prey that runs before the main hunt begins. I traced the merchant's route. I waited for him to lead me to his contacts. I did not expect to catch a bigger fish."

He smiled, and it was a terrifying sight, devoid of all warmth. "Tell me, boy. What is your name? I would know the name of the last rootless soul to ever bear the taint of the Void."

Kai's hand instinctively dropped to his dantian, the golden light within pulsing hotly, not with power, but with pure, primal terror. He was utterly and hopelessly outclassed. He couldn't fight. He couldn't outrun. He was a mouse staring into the unblinking eyes of a hawk.

And then, a new sensation bloomed in his chest. It wasn't the familiar, greedy hunger of the Void. It was something else. It was the memory of a dying merchant who had refused to surrender. It was the echo of his own voice, swearing an oath to defy the Heavens.

*No,* Kai thought, forcing his trembling legs to straighten. *I will not die here. Not like this.*

He looked up at the Seeker, and despite the fear that was trying to consume him, he forced a grim smile onto his lips. "My name," he said, his voice surprisingly steady, "is the one who's going to deliver that merchant's cargo. And you're standing in my way."

The Seeker's smile vanished. The air around him grew deathly cold, the moisture in the air crystallizing into a fine, glittering frost. The sword in his hand seemed to hum with a terrible, killing intent.

"A cripple with a death wish," the Seeker said softly, his voice dropping to a whisper. "How quaint. I shall grant your wish."

He raised his sword, a single, lazy gesture. And in that moment,
