CHAPTER 16: The Immortal Who Forgot to Die

Zhang yanked his hand back from the glowing sphere as if burned. The alert flashed in his vision, pulsing red.

[INVESTIGATION PROTOCOL INITIATED]
[Investigating Officer: Unknown]
[Estimated Time Until Contact: 3... 2... 1...]

The white void dissolved. Zhang found himself back in his cubicle, staring at the jade token on his desk. The warning had already faded from his interface, but his heart was still hammering against his ribs.

Someone was coming.

He had seconds. Maybe less.

Zhang grabbed the token and shoved it into his robe pocket. Then he yanked open his desk drawer and pulled out the stack of unresolved destiny reports that Hu had thrown at him earlier. He spread them across his workspace, grabbed a brush, and began writing furiously.

The footsteps approached.

"Zhang Wei."

Zhang looked up to find a woman standing at the entrance to his cubicle. She was tall, with silver hair that cascaded down her back like frozen waterfalls. Her robes were immaculate white, unmarked by any rank insignia. But the way she held herself—perfect posture, eyes that seemed to look through him rather than at him—told Zhang everything he needed to know.

This was not a clerk.

"I'm sorry," Zhang said, forcing confusion into his voice. "Can I help you? I'm very busy. Supervisor Hu needs these reports by—"

"I know who you are." She stepped into the cubicle. The air grew cold. "And I know what you did."

Zhang's brush paused. He kept his expression neutral. "I file reports. I process destiny requests. If you have a complaint about my work, you'll need to take it up with—"

"I'm not here about your work." She leaned down, placing both hands on his desk. Her silver eyes bore into his. "I'm here about the administrative error that killed you."

The words hung in the air like a guillotine blade.

Zhang's mind raced. Options: Deny everything. Feign ignorance. Try to delete the token. Run. None of them would work.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

"Liar." She smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "I've been monitoring the Celestial Management System since the day you accessed those records. You're very clever, Zhang Wei. Clever enough to find the hole. Clever enough to bypass the standard protocols. But not clever enough to hide."

Zhang's hand drifted toward his pocket. "If you're going to report me—"

"I'm not here to report you."

He stopped.

The woman straightened, brushing a strand of silver hair from her face. "My name is Xian Nu. I'm a Senior Auditor in the Department of Celestial Compliance. And I need your help."

Zhang stared at her. "You need my help."

"Yes."

"You want the dead guy who just discovered a bug in the system to help you."

"Correct."

"With what, exactly?"

Xian Nu glanced around the cubicle, as if checking for eavesdroppers. Then she leaned in close and lowered her voice. "There's an immortal who forgot to die."

Zhang blinked. "Come again?"

"His name is Li Feng. Former cultivator. Achieved immortality approximately three hundred years ago. Should have ascended to the Heavenly Court upon his death fifty years ago. But according to our records, he never died."

"Maybe he's still alive?"

"He's not. We tracked his soul signature. It faded from the mortal realm forty-seven years ago. By all accounts, he should have arrived at the Reincarnation Department for processing. But he never showed up."

Zhang considered this. "Maybe he got lost? The bureaucracy isn't exactly user-friendly."

"The Department of Mortal Affairs has a 99.8% success rate for soul retrieval. Souls don't get lost." Xian Nu's eyes narrowed. "Someone intercepted him. Someone with access to the Celestial Management System. Someone who knew how to reroute a soul without leaving a trace."

"And you think I can help you find out who?"

"I think you're the only person in this entire bureaucracy who has both the access and the willingness to break the rules." She pulled a jade slip from her sleeve and placed it on his desk. "This contains everything we know about Li Feng's disappearance. Take it. Study it. And when you're ready to help, find me in the Department of Celestial Compliance. Office 774."

Zhang looked at the jade slip. Then back at Xian Nu. "Why me?"

"Because everyone else I've asked has either refused or reported me to their superiors." Her smile turned bitter. "The Heavenly Bureaucracy is built on loyalty, Zhang Wei. Loyalty to the system. Loyalty to the chain of command. Loyalty to the lie that everything works perfectly. But you've already seen the cracks. You've already touched the truth."

She turned and walked away. Her footsteps echoed through the silent office, fading into the distant hum of celestial machinery.

Zhang stared at the jade slip for a long moment. Then he picked it up.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE: New Item Acquired]
[Item: Li Feng Case File (Encrypted)]
[Source: Xian Nu - Senior Auditor, Department of Celestial Compliance]
[Warning: Unauthorized possession of this file is a Level 7 violation. Penalty: Soul Erasure.]

Soul erasure. That was new.

Zhang pocketed the slip next to the jade token. Two pieces of evidence. Two paths into the heart of the system's corruption. Two chances to get himself killed.

He liked those odds.

The rest of the shift passed without incident. Zhang filed reports, processed destiny requests, and pretended not to notice the way Supervisor Hu kept glancing at him from across the department. The investigation alert had apparently been dealt with—or at least, no one had come to drag him away yet.

At the end of his shift, Zhang logged out and returned to his living quarters. The room was as sparse as he'd left it: a cot, a desk, a single window that looked out onto an endless expanse of clouds. But tonight, it felt different. Tonight, it felt like a prison cell.

He sat down at the desk and pulled out both items: the jade token and the encrypted case file.

Time to work.

He activated the token first. The system interface bloomed before him, displaying the administrative functions he'd unlocked. Destiny modification. Karmic ledger viewing. Timeline adjustment. And the redacted option, still tantalizingly out of reach.

But there was something else now. A new function, hidden in the depths of the menu:

[USER NOTE: Access to Department of Celestial Compliance - Pending Authorization]

She'd already granted him partial access. Smart. That meant she was serious about the partnership.

Zhang closed the token and turned to the case file. The encryption was impressive—he'd need to bypass at least three layers of celestial security to read the contents. But he'd spent his mortal life cracking software protections. This was just a different kind of code.

An hour later, he was in.

The file was a masterpiece of bureaucratic obfuscation. Li Feng, immortal cultivator, had been scheduled for ascension fifty-three years ago. His death had been recorded, his soul extracted, his reincarnation queue assigned. But somewhere between extraction and arrival, the trail went cold.

Zhang scrolled through the records. There were gaps—periods where the monitoring logs simply stopped. Not erased, not corrupted. Just... blank. As if someone had reached into the system and pulled the plug.

He checked the timestamps. The gaps corresponded exactly with the tenure of one particular official: a mid-level administrator in the Department of Mortal Affairs named Zhao Jian.

The same Zhao Jian who had been Supervisor Hu's predecessor.

Zhang's blood ran cold. He pulled up Hu's file. Sure enough, there it was: Hu had been promoted to department head immediately after Zhao Jian's sudden retirement. No explanation. No review. Just a quiet transfer of power.

This wasn't a coincidence. This was a conspiracy.

He reached for the jade token to dig deeper, but his hand froze mid-motion.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE: Unknown Access Detected]
[Source: Your living quarters]
[Action: File 774-B has been opened]
[Alert Level: Critical]

Zhang whirled around.

The door to his room was open.

Standing in the doorway was a man he'd never seen before. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with a face that looked like it had been carved from stone. His robes were black, unmarked by any celestial insignia. And in his hand, he held a staff of pure jade that hummed with barely contained power.

"Zhang Wei," the man said. His voice was flat. Emotionless. "You have been found in possession of classified materials. By order of the Celestial Compliance Department, you are hereby placed under arrest."

Zhang's hand closed around the jade token. "I don't think so."

"I'm not asking." The man took a step forward. The air pressure in the room spiked. "Surrender the token and the file. Come quietly. Or I will be forced to use lethal force."

Lethal force. In the afterlife. That was a joke.

But Zhang wasn't laughing.

He looked at the token in his hand. At the file on his desk. At the man in the doorway. Three heartbeats. Three options.

Run. Fight. Talk.

He chose option four.

"Do you know what's in this file?" Zhang asked.

The man paused. "Irrelevant."

"Irrelevant?" Zhang laughed. "An immortal who disappeared from the system. A department head who retired under suspicious circumstances. A trail of blank logs that leads straight to the current Supervisor of Mortal Affairs. And you're telling me that's irrelevant?"

The man's expression didn't change. But his grip on the staff tightened.

"I'm willing to bet," Zhang continued, "that if we dig a little deeper, we'll find even more. Maybe a few other immortals who went missing. Maybe some souls that were rerouted for personal gain. Maybe even proof that the Heavenly Bureaucracy isn't as perfect as everyone pretends it is."

The man said nothing.

"So here's my question." Zhang stood up slowly, keeping the token in his hand. "Are you here to arrest me because I broke the rules? Or are you here to silence me because I found the truth?"

The room fell silent. The humming of the staff grew louder.

Then the man smiled.

It was not a friendly smile.

"Clever," he said. "Very clever. But cleverness won't save you from what's coming."

He raised the staff.

Zhang activated the token.

[COMMAND: Emergency Protocol - System Override]
[Verification: Soul ID 7845-B]
[Authorization: Bypass Active]
[Initiating: Temporal Stasis Field]

The world froze.

The man in the doorway stopped mid-swing. The staff's glow became motionless. Even the clouds outside the window ceased to move.

Zhang let out a shaky breath. He had seconds—maybe minutes—before the system noticed the unauthorized override and shut it down.

He grabbed the case file, shoved it into his robe, and ran.

Past the frozen man. Through the empty hallways. Down staircases that spiraled into infinity. Past offices filled with statues of immortals caught in mid-motion.

He didn't stop running until he reached a door he'd never seen before.

It was made of black iron, covered in runes that pulsed with a sickly green light. Above it, a sign read:

[DEPARTMENT OF CELESTIAL COMPLIANCE]
[RESTRICTED ACCESS]
[LEVEL 7 CLEARANCE REQUIRED]

Zhang's hand hovered
